Converting an Overseas Driver's License to a Turkish Driver's License
Is an Overseas Driving License Valid in Turkey?
Turkish citizens or foreign nationals have the right to use their licenses in Turkey, which they obtained abroad, in accordance with the agreements made between countries. However, foreign licenses have a valid period in Turkey. At the end of this period, people who want to continue driving in Turkey are required to convert their foreign licenses to Turkish ones.
How Long Are Foreign Driving Licenses Valid in Turkey?
Driving licenses obtained from abroad are valid for 6 months in Turkey. From the moment of entry to Turkey, a vehicle can be driven in Turkey with a foreign license for a maximum of 6 months. Persons who want to use their foreign license after 6 months can use their foreign license for another 6 months by having the sworn translation of the driver's license approved by the foreign representative offices or notary public.
It is obligatory for people who have completed 1 year or will live in Turkey permanently to convert their foreign license to a Turkish driver's license within 1 year. If it is not turned, the use of the vehicle is prohibited.
How long is the driver's license of foreign nationals valid in Turkey?
The licenses of foreign nationals who enter the country are valid for a maximum of 6 months from the date of entry into the country. At the end of the 6-month period, foreign nationals who will stay in Turkey must convert their driver's licenses with a Turkish license in order to drive.
Which Countries' Driving Licenses Can Be Converted to a Turkish Driver's License?
In order to change the driver's licenses obtained from abroad to Turkish licenses, it is necessary to be included in one of the 84 countries that are party to the Road Traffic Convention and have an agreement on the mutual exchange of driver's licenses. It is not possible to convert driver's licenses obtained from countries other than these countries into Turkish driver's licenses. If the country you have a driver's license is not one of these countries, you have no chance to convert your foreign driver's license to a Turkish driver's license.
